AmyandRose's Guide to buying a diaper bag

If you’re starting to feel as if you are spending more time, energy and thought selecting the perfect diaper bag than you put into choosing your child’s name, then this list of must-have diaper bag features is sure to rescue you!

Choosing the ideal diaper bag is a big decision. Quality, well-crafted, stylish diaper bags are not cheap. A high-quality fashion mummy maternity nappy bag is an investment that is well worth the price as you will be toting this bag everywhere for several years.

As a mom you are busy, on-the-go, with things to do and places to be. You will want to select a diaper bag that offers you all the unique features you need to fit your individual lifestyle.

There is an overwhelming choice of diaper bags on the market now and the sheer volume of the selection can be intimidating. The following features are considered must-haves by busy, on-the-go moms just like you:

Secure closure with easy, one-handed access to opening

A difficult combination is a secure closure with an easy-to-access opening. You want to ensure your baby bottles, toys and diapers won’t go tumbling across the room, yet you want to be able to access the contents easily and quickly.

A diaper bag closure that offers security and functionality is a durable magnetic snap front closure. A good magnetic snap will hold the content of your bag intact even if your bag goes tumbling. Yet, a firm one-handed tug on the flap easily opens the bag and allows you to grab what you need quickly.

Durable, easy-cleaning exterior fabric

Your diaper bag goes with you everywhere: supermarket, playdates, mall, park. It is going to be exposed to dirt and unidentified sticky things. A durable, easy-cleaning exterior fabric is absolutely essential.

A laminated, waterproof vinyl exterior fabric is ideal for protecting the exterior and providing easy clean-up. A high-quality mummy nappy bag offers this fully functional exterior fabric without looking at all too shiny and plastic-looking.

Functional straps or handles

Strap length and width is a personal preference, yet choosing a diaper bag with a strap or handles (some offer both) that are not-too-thin and securely attached to the bag is essential. Many diaper bags are also available with multi-purpose straps, which can convert your baby bag from an over the shoulder tote, to a messenger style bag, and then to a stroller bag.

Compartmentalization / Custom-sized pockets

The more pockets the better. You will want to keep your diaper-changing pad segregated from the baby bottles and your extra baby clothes separate from your sippy cups. Interior dividers and pockets that are waterproof and easy-cleaning are the best kind.

In addition, many designer diaper bags now offer custom-sized pockets, each sized appropriately for the accessories that a mom carries in her diaper bag: cell phone, keys, wallet, baby bottles, diaper changing pad, PDA. Custom-fitted pockets allow easy access to specific items without scouring through a pile of jumbled objects.

Stylish design

A great diaper bag should carry you through the first years of your baby’s life. Select a design that is stylish and fits your individual tastes. With so many diaper bags design and styles available, you are sure to find the perfect fashionable diaper bag with all the above must-have features for you and your baby!

Here are some diaper bag FAQs

Here are some questions and answers that will help you make that decision practically.

What are diaper bag essentials?

You would like to carry a lot of items in your baby bag. But the size of the bag is always limited. And you can only carry some items in it. But what are those items?

Those are the essential items for your baby. The things that your baby according to his/her age will require the most. I said this because the items required by an infant will be different from that of a toddler.

What are diaper bags?

Diaper Bags is nothing but an organizer for your baby stuff. We all know how hard it can be for a mom to do everything.

A diaper bag is a friend, a companion that gets you everything you need and whenever you need it (of course it gets you whatever you packed).

How big is a diaper bag?

The size of a diaper bag totally depends on what you want to carry in it. If you just want to carry baby's necessities then a small diaper bag is enough.

However, if you also want to carry some extra items for the baby as well as some snacks and books for yourself, I recommend getting a duffle bag style bag or a backpack.

How to pack or organize a diaper bag?

The best way to pack anything inside any bag is to first prepare a list of items that you want to carry in the bag. Then to set a priority of each item according to the frequency of use.

Put the items with more use at the top. This will ensure that you won't need to unpack the whole bag again and again just to get that thing at the bottom.

Also, remember to keep all the small things including the pacifiers and wipes in the pockets provided in the bag.

How to choose a diaper bag?

There are certain key points that you should always keep in mind while choosing a diaper bag. These are:

Form factor

The best way to know which form factor of a baby bag you will love to use, just check your previous 10 bags. They will be the base for what you can purchase next.

Many find backpack comfortable over other bags, but if you have not used a backpack in years or if you do not have one then getting a backpack style diaper bag may not be the best idea after all.

A large bag can be good but not for every occasion. One of the best examples is flight's cabin baggage. There are bags that will not be allowed in the cabin.

A feature-rich bag will always be more beneficial. Do check the bag if you can fit at least your baby essentials. Some diaper bags come with dividers to keep your stuff neat and tidy. I always prefer those to a single big space.

Currently diaper bags are prepared with one or mixture of these: genuine leather, faux leather, canvas, cotton.

Can you bring a diaper bag on a plane?

Most airways allow diaper bags as cabin baggage. They even sometimes allow you to carry it as an extra bag without any fee (I recommend to check with the airways).

However, there are some bags that you can carry only as check-in luggage. This is mainly because of the large size of the bag.

Can you wash the diaper bag?

Absolutely! There will be incidents when you forgot to close the lid of the baby formula tightly or any foodstuff gets a spill on the bag. If you do not wash the bag, it will smell really bad.

Some bags cannot be machine washed. So, please check the instructions carefully before throwing your bag into the machine.

What is The Dad Bag?

Why would dad need his own diaper bag? I have three young ones and I can say from experience that each “job” has its own equipment, so to speak. Sure, you could use a bagpack or a messenger bag or perhaps in a pinch you could use your wife’s diaper bag. But to be an organized dad and wear something that better reflects your personal style (as opposed to the pink flowers and polka dots on your wife’s bag), you will need a separate bag.

With my first kid, I could get away with jamming a few diapers in my back pocket and going on an adventure with him, now with three kids, two in diapers, I need as much organization as I can afford.

If you meditate on the thought of what active fathering is, which for me is spending time with your kids, going places with them and forging those excellent memories and fantastic adventures (and yes, changing their diapers along the way). Changing a baby’s diaper is the most common and thankless, I may add, acts of parenting.

To be an active dad and parent you must share the tasks (the excellent, the terrible and the stinky), and for some, maybe, that starts with something as simple as a bag with a changing pad in it and pockets designed perfectly for diapers and bottles. If you look around (and I have extensively) there is an inherent lack of dad-centric products out there and he is filling a need. So, for those of us guys who want to be active dads we need our “equipment” and Chris is serving it up hot and with plenty of style.

Form or function?

This line of bags has a number of options, both in design and in style. They have the compact Mini which seems derivative of the dreaded fanny packs of yester-year but it has been updated with a long shoulder strap which gives it a fresh look.

For those runs to the park or to the store and back or the Survival Pack which will cover all the bases for you, right down to the matching insulated bottle holders for those longer trips. And yes, there is a backpack version as well, complete with a plethora of secret pockets and compartments.
